Like most trends, kitchen colour trends are cyclical and whilst grey has been without doubt the most dominant colour over the last ten years, people are now ready to embrace a little (or alot) of colour in the kitchen once again. This trend is also fuelled by a whole host of social media influencers and interior design experts demonstrating how to do so tastefully and creatively. So, if you are ready to take the plunge and inject some colour into your kitchen, here are some top tips for doing it well:
- Add colour with your cabinets: The easiest way to add colour to a kitchen is to steer away from a grey or white colour scheme and be bold with your choice of cabinet colour. Popular colours include all shades of blue such as our Urban range in Indigo, green tones like Harvard in Hunter Green or Pain to Order Bottle Green and pink such as our Alta Kitchen in Paint to Order Dusky Pink The next big kitchen trend on the horizon embraces the retro hues of orange and red. These are colours that can make you feel happy and energised, depending on the tone and saturation, so it all depends on the type of ambience you are hoping to create. If you feel like bold but tasteful is your style , then check out the new Paint to Order shade, Carmine Red.
- Mix and match: Mixing colours is quite a brave choice when it comes to kitchens, but it can also be done in a tasteful way by thinking about tonal variations, harmonious or complementary colours:
Tonal – this is the art of taking one base colour and using variations throughout the kitchen. This would work well with more Contemporary kitchen ranges using the same colour but in different finishes such as Gloss platinum and Gloss Cashmere. Continuing the theme throughout the kitchen by adding a coloured worktop and wall colour in different tones and hues of the same colour.
Harmonious – this involves choosing colours that are close to each other on the colour wheel, that will complement each other. For example, our Alta ‘Paint to Order’ in dusky pink complemented with an arctic marble worktop can work hand in hand for a harmonious kitchen.
Complementary - bold colours combined with an opposite, yet complementary colour can create a real statement. Urban in Indigo and white would work well by offering a strong yet complementary colour contrast. Pair this colour combination with a solid surface and inline brass trim handles for a luxurious, designer kitchen look.
- Worktops aren’t just functional: You can also add colour to your kitchen by choosing a statement worktop. Trilium and other darker Dekton shades of solid worktops can add visual interest to a neutral cabinet scheme. Dekton is a blend of porcelain, quartz and glass and works well with cream or white cabinets, making sure that the kitchen still feels bright, modern, and spacious.
- Make a statement with your island: Whilst you might not want to use coloured cabinets throughout your kitchen you could think about installing a kitchen island that pops with colour. This could either be in a totally different colour to the rest of the kitchen, or a brighter or darker version of a shade that's already been used. A fun dusky pink shade adds a fresh feel and perfectly blends with a wide range of colours or go for a dark midnight blue to really make a statement.
- Taps and handles: Aside from the cabinets, taps and handles are a great way to introduce colour. Warm coppers, bronze or brass are proving to be popular choices and can add visual interest and colour to any kitchen design.
- Walls and Floors: Colour can be easily incorporated into floor coverings and walls if you are still a little wary of using coloured cabinets. A simple yet effective way to add colour to a kitchen is through a coloured splashback or by choosing bright and bold wall tiles or paint.
