MKM Building Supplies (MKM), the UK’s proper independent builders’ merchant, will open its 139th branch in Arbroath, Angus on Monday 9 February 2026, creating a dozen new jobs for local people.
MKM Arbroath will bring expert advice, strong stock levels, and friendly, no-nonsense service to tradespeople and homeowners across Angus, all led by Branch Directors Kris Stott and Nick Scott. The duo, who have over 30 years of experience combined, first joined MKM at the Dundee branch back in 2020. Both were raised in Angus, know the community well, and say the new branch is built ‘by Arbroath, for Arbroath’.
Kris explained: “People in Angus take pride in their work. They’re grafters, care about quality, and appreciate straight talking. We’re the same. MKM’s culture is all about relationships, trust and supporting your community. Arbroath deserves a builders’ merchant that lives by that.”
Located on the outskirts of town, MKM Arbroath brings together a full range of Building materials. Timber, landscaping and Roofing as well as Plumbing & Heating, and Insulation with in-branch specialists for each area, plus dedicated kitchen and bathroom designers. MKM Arbroath will help customers ‘get it sorted’ without fuss.
A common challenge in the area is reliable product availability. Many local trades say they struggle to find a well-stocked, consistent merchant that genuinely understands what Angus customers need. With strong stock profiles shaped by local insight and a team that knows the region’s work patterns inside out - MKM Arbroath aims to solve that from day one.
Standout brands will include Marshalls, Velux, Worcester Bosch and Roper Rhodes - chosen for their reliability and relevance to the local market.
The branch will slot naturally into MKM’s growing Scottish network, with Kris and Nick working closely with the Dundee team, run by Nick’s father, Barclay Scott. Family-rooted knowledge runs deep at MKM Arbroath too - Kris was introduced to merchanting by his father, Alex Stott, who managed Plumb Centre for over two decades and is well known locally for his plumbing and heating expertise. That shared heritage means customers across Angus benefit from generations of experience, with branches that genuinely work together to offer better access to support, stock and specialist knowledge.
Nick added: “Our team has decades of combined experience. Everyone we’ve hired knows their stuff and knows Angus. That matters. Whether you’re a trade regular or a homeowner planning your first kitchen, you’ll always get clear advice from people who genuinely care about helping you.”
Inside, customers will find a modern kitchen and bathroom showroom designed to be hands-on and inspiring. The team offers free design appointments and one-to-one guidance for everything from full extensions to smaller DIY upgrades. Training and product knowledge form a big part of MKM’s approach, ensuring every customer gets confident, friendly and expert support.
Externally, the branch has a footprint of over 41,000 sq ft. The space includes large, covered areas and treated-timber racks with canopies to keep stock in top condition year-round – especially important in coastal Angus, where the weather can shift faster than you can say “fit like?”.
As a locally led branch, all key decisions are made in Arbroath by Kris and Nick. That local decision-making means stock profiles, pricing and turnaround times can adapt quickly to what the trade needs most. Free local delivery is available across Angus, with same-day options where possible. Close coordination with local trades will ensure clear communication, reliable timings and materials arriving exactly when needed.
Kris said: “You can’t talk about Arbroath without mentioning the Smokie. It’s a symbol of this town. Proud, crafted with care, and rooted in tradition. That’s the kind of service we want to bring to customers. Real people, real pride, real quality.”
The new branch will support local charities and community initiatives from day one, with plans already underway to support Arbroath FC Community Trust - a local charity aiming to improve the life chances of the people of Arbroath through the power of football.
The goal, both Branch Directors agree, is to be more than a merchant – becoming a place where people feel comfortable dropping in for advice, support, or just a quick coffee and chat.
Nick summed it up: “We’re proud to bring MKM to Arbroath. Honest service, solid stock, friendly faces, and a team that’ll always go the extra mile. If you need materials, guidance, inspiration – or even just a brew – come see us. Let’s get it sorted.”
